Cuban-born and Atlantic Canada–based artist Dee Hernández is redefining the boundaries of Latin, soul, and jazz fusion. Known for her magnetic stage presence and deeply expressive vocals, she has become one of Eastern Canada’s most distinctive voices — praised by Maritime Edit as “The Voice of Cuban-Canadian Jazz” and described by Sass Jordan as a “World-Class Jazz Singer.”
In July 2025, Dee released her new EP Pa’ Que Lo Pruebes (So You Can Taste It) — a bold fusion of Cuban rhythms, soul, and contemporary pop produced in collaboration with Honduran producer El Tata. The project includes standout singles like “Danzón,” “Ponte Pa’ Ti,” and “16.” The EP has been acclaimed by critics internationally:
“‘Danzón’ by Dee Hernández revisits a cornerstone of Cuban tradition with striking intimacy… reshaping that lineage into a contemporary soul framework… carrying both Cuban resonance and R&B inflection.” — Rhythm Passport (UK)
“Dee Hernández bridges tradition and modernity, making the classics part of her intimate and very living musical statement — a delicate balance of tradition and innovation.” — Vox Magazine
Hernández’s artistry reflects a life rooted in cultural fusion and personal evolution. Born and classically trained in Havana, Cuba, she studied at the Conservatory of Music Alejandro García Caturla before relocating to Canada, where her sound began to intertwine Afro-Cuban rhythms with North American soul, funk, and pop influences.
Her growing list of accolades includes two East Coast Music Award nominations (2025) in the Global Release and R&B/Soul Recording categories, and four Music New Brunswick Award nominations, where she now leads the province for nominations. She has been recognized by the Black Business & Professional Network as a cultural ambassador and was named one of the Top 10 Black Artists in Atlantic Canada by Shifter Magazine.
A self-managed artist, Dee has showcased at Canadian Music Week, ECMA, Atlantic Presenters Conference, and Poetry Jazz Café, and will perform this November at Get Together Toronto (The Drake Underground). Her music has been featured nationally on CBC Saturday Night Jazz, Marvin’s Room, and Shift, as well as in CAA Magazine and Edit Magazine, which featured her as “The Voice of Culture.”
With her debut album Deshecha (Undone) set for late 2025, Dee Hernández continues to carve a singular path — one that honours her Cuban roots while resonating with global audiences. As Jully Black, widely known as Canada’s Queen of R&B Soul, said best:
“Dee Hernández is a win for Music, for Culture Music, for Black Music, and for all the Music in our country.”
