Join the Magic on the Road: Stage Manager Opportunities

Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia is seeking professional Stage Managers (Canadian Actors’ Equity Association) for our upcoming 2026-2027 touring season. Known for our unique brand of puppetry and storytelling, we are looking for organized, collaborative, and road-ready individuals to bring our productions to audiences across North America.

Position 1: Stage Manager:
Production:The Three Little Pigs & Other Tales (TYA Production)
Touring Region: Canada and the United States
Contract Dates:
September 2026 – April 2027

The Role: Be a part of Mermaid’s new comedic farce!  The Three Little Pigs & Other Tales is a reinvented classic about friendship and becoming a hero.
Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain the artistic integrity of the production throughout a multi-month tour.

  • Company Management

  • Driving Responsibilities

  • Manage all technical cues, including lighting, projection, and sound.

  • Oversee load-ins and loadouts in a variety of venues professional performing arts spaces.

  • Foster a positive, professional environment for the touring cast and crew.

  • Act as the primary liaison between the touring company and the home office.

Position 2: Stage Manager
Production:
Ocean Blue (New TYA Production)
Touring Region:
Canada and the United States
Contract Dates:
November 2026 – May 2027

The Role: Be a part of Mermaid’s newest creation! Ocean Blue is our latest TYA (Theatre for Young Audiences) production, exploring themes of biodiversity, powerful storytelling and provocative blacklight puppetry.
Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain the artistic integrity of the production throughout a multi-month tour.

  • Company Management

  • Driving Responsibilities

  • Manage all technical cues, including lighting, projection, and sound.

  • Oversee load-ins and loadouts in a variety of venues professional performing arts spaces.

  • Foster a positive, professional environment for the touring cast and crew.

  • Act as the primary liaison between the touring company and the home office.

Candidate Requirements (Both Positions)

  • CAEA Membership: Candidates must be members in good standing with Canadian Actors’ Equity Association (CTA or ITA terms apply).

  • Touring Experience: Proven experience in touring logistics and managing technical elements in diverse venues a plus

  • Driver’s License: A valid driver’s license and a clean driving record are required (experience driving large vehicles/sprinter vans is an asset).

  • Travel Documents: Must have a valid passport and be eligible for a P2 Visa (facilitated by the company) for entry into the United States.

  • Collaborative Spirit: A proactive, problem-solving attitude and a passion for Theatre for Young Audiences.

Responsibilities
Under the direction of the Creative Producer / Executive Director on all MermaidTV digital products:

Design, illustrate and rig characters and backgrounds for 2D and 3D environments
Support all animation and digital projects as well as collaborate with fellow animators
Ability to produce high-caliber work on time
Participates in creative discussions
Participates in professional development opportunities 

Expected Requirements
Professional study, degree, or equivalent experience in animation, VFX arts, digital artist, or as a technical artist
Knowledge and skillset to understand and utilize Adobe Character Animate, and Adobe products (Illustrator, After Effects, Photoshop) for 2D environments
Ability to successfully utilize 3D software: Houdini, Blender, Unreal Engine to create characters and backgrounds for 3D environments
Ability to successfully utilize rendering programs such as Octane, Redshift, or Renderman
Willingness to learn as well as yield a high level of project output
Excellent time-management
Takes direction well while working under pressure and able to meet deadlines
A genuine curiosity for the art of puppetry
Understands and believes in the company’s mandate and mission
Good humored
Enjoys working both independently and in a team environment

Shop Associate - Contract

We are looking for individuals who are passionate about building for the performing arts.  Mermaid Theatre shows are designed to travel.  Compact, efficient, and durable.  Our puppets and sets venture to unique places which require an immense amount of pre-planning before any piece of the show is built.  We welcome experienced builders only into our shop.
