Tours & Workshops

Mermaid Theatre’s Institute of Puppetry Arts is pleased to offer workshops and demonstrations of the art of puppetry.  We are available to travel to area schools, and we can also host school groups at our facility in Windsor.  In addition to the options below, Mermaid will also entertain proposals for extended workshops with adequate advance notice.  Extended workshops can include puppet-making and manipulation techniques in a variety of puppetry styles.  The cost of extended workshops varies; Mermaid Theatre will work with you to create a customized workshop that fits your school’s budget.

ANIMOTION

Mermaid’s annual intensive for theatre professionals and other puppetry enthusiasts is offered every spring at our facility.  The three-week course is an “intensive exploration of objects in motion.” Full details about the course are on our website at mermaidtheatre.ca/animotion.

ONE-SESSION PUPPETRY WORKSHOPS
(Note: these workshops are only available in Nova Scotia — not as part of our touring productions)

1.  Discovering Puppet Manipulation
Participants will have the opportunity to learn how to manipulate a variety of puppets.  These styles will range from basic hand puppets to large “doughboys,” which are five-person puppets.  They begin by learning the techniques of moving puppets around the stage or floor.  After undertaking some puppet theatre exercises and learning some basic skills, students can further explore the movements and possibilities of the puppets.  Finally, participants will have the opportunity to develop some scenes using their new knowledge of puppetry.

2.  Make Your Own Puppet
Participants will learn how to create their own puppets.  The puppets are created by combining common, everyday items with additional materials supplied by the instructor.   Under supervision, the participants will have a chance to decorate their creations and develop the puppet’s character and costume.  Everyone will leave the workshop with their own unique creation to take home and the knowledge of how to make it move.

NOTE: Fees for traveling workshops may include travel, materials, and instructor prep time depending on the workshop and location.  Please contact us for an estimate.  Workshops are subject to instructor availability. Morning, afternoon, or after-school workshops can all be accommodated.
