Mermaid Institute of Puppetry Arts
ANIMOTION (VII) PUPPETRY INTENSIVE
April 27 – May 16, 2015
Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia has earned international acclaim for its unique staged adaptations of children’s beloved literary classics. The company’s innovative approach to puppetry has been endorsed by five million spectators on four continents, and provides exceptional career opportunities for Atlantic Region creative artists.
The Mermaid Institute of Puppetry Arts was established to provide youngsters and community participants with basic instruction, and to offer specialized training for theatre artists who seek enhanced professional-level skills. Based at Mermaid’s spacious headquarters in Windsor, Nova Scotia, the Institute’s three-week ANIMOTION intensive is designed for those with a strong interest in puppetry and physical theatre and the desire to expand their range of abilities.
The program offers a dual emphasis on animation and objects in motion. Classes are held from Monday through Saturday, with students engaged in hands-on instruction, group creation, production, and puppet construction. Participants are exposed to a range of puppetry styles, broadening their frame of reference and allowing common language and skills to emerge. The session culminates with an informal presentation, intended to showcase newly acquired competence.
Exceptional students may be considered for apprenticeships and ultimate engagement as performers with Mermaid’s touring productions.
The program is open to both theatre professionals and puppetry enthusiasts. Reasonable accommodation is available within walking range of Mermaid’s spacious headquarters, located less than an hour from Halifax at the gateway to the Nova Scotia’s scenic Annapolis Valley.
Faculty Members for 2015 will include:
Jim Morrow – Jim creates puppets for stage, television and film. He is Mermaid’s Artistic Director, and as Production Designer and Director has created the company’s most widely travelled shows. Jim has toured extensively as a performer and frequently conducts master classes at universities and theatres both at home and abroad.
