BEYOND BLUE Project 2013
Beginning in October 2012, Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia has been re-energizing its Youtheatre and launching a new endeavor, the Beyond Blue Project, directed at youth in the Annapolis Valley on the topic of teens living with anxiety and depression. The first phase of this project, funded by Hants County CAN (Community Access Network) and Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia, has introduced young people to the Youtheatre through school workshops. The Circle, a group of local teens who are interested in becoming part of this initiative, are now meeting weekly at Mermaid. They will learn about theatre, express themselves creatively and eventually share stories about what it is like for teenagers to live with mental illness, as a means of spreading awareness and decreasing stigma.
From its inception, Mermaid Youtheatre has embraced the concept of young people speaking directly to their peers about subject matter that is important to them, and has enabled its participants to communicate effectively in order to reflect the realities of their universe. The final performance script will provide an important medium to share information, and its creation and eventual performance will incorporate many newly acquired skills.
The Beyond Blue Project will function under the close supervision of Dr. Lorraine Lazier, IWK Psychiatrist. She will provide direction with the research and information component, and her involvement will infuse the project with the relevant data and analysis which will guide both the Youtheatre participants as well as those viewing the performances as they seek to navigate their own challenges with anxiety and depression. The next phase of this project, from January-June 2013, will be supported by the Eastern Kings Memorial Health Foundation and Mermaid Theatre, and is currently seeking additional funding.
