Theatre Newfoundland Labrador
Thursday, May 7, 2015 at 7:00pm
Tickets $25 advance / $28 door

With Cruel Times in Between is a lyrical and beautiful portrait of Newfoundland culture drawn from the rhythmic writings of one of the province’s most beloved poets, Al Pittman. Using selections from his poems, prose, songs and plays, Theatre Newfoundland Labrador shares the unique culture of island life. An ensemble cast of six wonderfully talented actors create a village and its many characters in TNL’s signature theatrical style – with nothing more than a few chairs, some cloth, their bodies and their voices.

Founded in 1979 by the late Maxim Mazumdar, Theatre Newfoundland Labrador (TNL) operates a year-round professional theatre company from its home base in Corner Brook. First presented in 2011, With Cruel Times In Between was created in collaboration with Second Storey Youth Theatre of Launceston, Tasmania. The show has been widely performed in communities ranging from Fogo Island to Tasmania.

Mermaid Imperial Performing Arts Centre

In 2003, Mermaid purchased the vacant Imperial Theatre at 106 Gerrish Street, right next door to the facility we had occupied since 1987.  Over the next several years, the stage was enlarged, the lobby was refurbished, and an improved backstage area was added on. The most recent improvements, a new lighting catwalk and backstage storage area were added in 2013. The renewed Mermaid Imperial Performing Arts Centre began offering an annual Entertainment Series starting in 2007. Since then, MIPAC has played host to a number of distinguished artists from across Canada.  Celebrated artists like Bruce Cockburn, George Canyon, Matt Andersen, Joe Sealy, Joel Plaskett, and Jill Barber have all performed on our stage.  With Windsor once again in the province-wide circuit of venues, we can again offer world-class entertainment for kids and adults here in our hometown.

The theatre is used for many purposes, including rehearsals for Mermaid’s own flagship productions; it is rented by a variety of community groups for events both public and private; it has been used for movie location filming; and Mermaid has begun using the theatre for school-time matinee performances for the benefit of area students and preschoolers, bringing world-class theatre to children from all around the Annapolis Valley.
