Sara Lee Lewis, Managing Director
(Windsor, NS) Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia, one of Canada’s most successful touring theatre companies, recently welcomed its five millionth spectator. The milestone event, a performance of Guess How Much I Love You & I Love My Little Storybook, took place at the Playhouse Square Theatre in Cleveland, Ohio on Friday, January 18, 2013. The show was among more than three hundred offered during the 2012-2013 season.
The company, which celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2012, has built an international reputation for its staged adaptations of beloved children’s stories. Mermaid’s signature shows feature the work of authors such as Eric Carle (The Very Hungry Caterpillar), Leo Lionni (Swimmy), Margaret Wise Brown (Goodnight Moon), and Anita Jeram (Guess How Much I Love You). The company’s next production (Stella, Queen of the Snow/Stella, reine des neiges) will showcase books by Canadian author/illustrator, Marie-Louise Gay.
Featuring inventive puppetry and evocative original music, Mermaid’s repertory engages family audiences throughout North America and much further afield. The company has appeared in thirteen countries, has presented shows in five languages, and generally performs for 200,000 spectators annually. Closer to home, Mermaid appears regularly at its home theatre (the Mermaid Imperial Performing Arts Centre); operates an active training program (the Mermaid Institute of Puppetry Arts); and facilitates an outreach program for adolescents (the Mermaid Youtheatre).
